Riding a motorcycle is one of those things that feels completely out of reach until you actually start. Then it clicks. And once it does, you wonder why you waited so long.

If you have been putting off getting your licence because of cost concerns or simply not knowing where to begin, this guide is for you.

Why Bristol Is a Great City to Start Riding

Bristol has a brilliant mix of urban roads, quiet residential streets, and open routes heading straight out into the countryside. Genuinely one of the better cities in the UK to learn in. You get real-world variety from day one, which actually makes you a better rider faster.

And with the right training school behind you, the whole process does not have to drain your savings either.

What Does Affordable Motorcycle Training Actually Look Like?

"Affordable" does not mean cutting corners. It means getting real value for what you spend. Big difference.

Ride53 is a Bristol-based motorcycle training school that keeps prices competitive without compromising on quality. Instructors are trained to a high standard, bikes and gear are provided, and scheduling is genuinely flexible.

That last bit matters more than most people realise. Life gets busy, things shift. Having multiple instructors available means you are not waiting weeks just to find a free slot.

Here is a quick look at what is on offer:

• CBT (Compulsory Basic Training): From £140 for a 3.5-hour session or £195 for a full day

• Module 1 Training: £195 per 3.5-hour lesson covering off-road manoeuvres and controlled skills

• Module 2 Training: £195 per 3.5-hour lesson for on-road riding in real traffic

One more thing worth knowing. Use the code RIDE10 at booking and get 10% off your first session. Straightforward saving, no strings attached.

Breaking Down the Training Path

Starting: The CBT

The Compulsory Basic Training is where every new rider begins. It is not a test you pass or fail in the usual sense. Think of it more as a structured day of building real skills, broken into five clear stages:

1. Introduction and eyesight check

2. Motorcycle controls and basic handling, off-road

3. Practical manoeuvres, including turning, braking and gear use

4. Road rules and riding awareness

5. Supervised riding on actual public roads

Once you complete it, you receive a DL196 certificate valid for two years. That certificate lets you ride a 125cc motorcycle with L-plates on public roads. It is the legal starting point before anything else.

Building on It: Module 1

After your CBT, Module 1 is the next step toward a full licence. This is an off-road skills assessment run by the DVSA. Expect U-turns, figure-of-eights, emergency stops, and hazard avoidance exercises. It is focused entirely on how well you handle the bike, nothing more complicated than that.

Taking It to the Road: Module 2

Module 2 brings everything onto public roads. A DVSA examiner rides behind you and assesses your awareness, road positioning, signal use, and how you respond to real traffic. Pass this, and you walk away with your full motorcycle licence.

What You Get with Ride53

No need to own a bike or helmet before turning up. Ride53 takes care of the practical side:

• Motorcycles matched to your licence level, the Kawasaki Z-125 for CBT and the Kawasaki Z-650 for A and A1 training

• Helmet, gloves, and a high-visibility jacket

• Consistent, professional instruction at every stage

The training centre sits at the Saracens Centre, Memorial Ground, Bristol BS10 7TT. Easy to find, well set up, and purpose-ready for practical sessions.
