 Top Motorcycle Training & Testing FAQs

1. Do I need a license to start motorcycle training?

Answer: You’ll need a valid provisional or full UK driving licence to begin motorcycle training.

2. What is CBT (Compulsory Basic Training)?

Answer: CBT is a course that allows you to ride a motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc (or 50cc if you’re 16) on the road with L plates. It’s not a full licence but is required by law before riding on public roads.

3. How long is my CBT certificate valid for?

Answer: Your CBT certificate (DL196) is valid for 2 years. If you haven’t passed your full motorcycle test by then, you’ll need to retake the CBT.

4. What’s the difference between A1, A2, and A motorcycle licences?

Answer: • A1 Licence: Age 17+, ride up to 125cc.
               • A2 Licence: Age 19+, ride up to 35kW (47bhp).
               • Full Category A Licence: Age 24+ (or 21+ via progressive access), ride any size motorcycle.

5. How long does it take to get a full motorcycle licence?

Answer: It varies, but we offer lessons that are 3.5 hours long and we take it on a lesson to lesson basis to get you up to standard safely!

6. Do I need to pass a theory test before motorcycle training?

Answer: You don’t need to pass the theory test for CBT, but you must pass the motorcycle theory test before taking the Module 1 and Module 2 practical tests for a full licence.

7. What are Module 1 and Module 2 tests?

Answer: • Module 1: Off-road maneuvers including slalom, figure 8, emergency stop, and hazard avoidance.
               • Module 2: On-road riding, including real traffic conditions and independent riding.

8. What kind of motorcycle will I learn on?

Answer: You’ll train on a bike appropriate to your licence level. CBT we offer automatic scooter or manual Kawasaki Z-125 and for A and A1 license we us Kawasaki Z-650's.

9. Do I need my own gear and bike?

Answer: No — our training school provide a motorcycle, helmet, gloves, and high-visibility jacket. However, you’re welcome to use your own gear if it meets safety standards.
